A TRAVEL NEWS ARTICLE ABOUT SWEDEN

THE CITY OF KIRUNA

A great all year round vacation destination, Kiruna is the northern most city in Sweden, situated in the province of Lapland. It was founded in 1900 due to the abundance of iron ore and this is still a key industry in the area. The town is very dependent on the state owned Swedish mining company Luossavaara-Kiirunavaara Aktiebolag (LKAB). Their production is sold throughout much of the world, with the principle markets being European steel mills, as well as North Africa, the Middle East and Southeast Asia.

Kiruna Church

Kiruna is twinned with Narvik in Norway and Archangel in Russia.

Despite conjuring up visions of the wild Swedish north, food is important in Kiruna. Hunting and fishing have been a key element in the daily lives of the inhabitants and in Kiruna, they still are. When you start talking to a Kiruna, you'll soon notice that there is great interest in cooking and its traditions. Food is culture in Kiruna.

For visitors to Kiruna it is easy to find great food. Even after a walk into the mountains, you can reward yourself with a good dinner. In the center of Kiruna there are many nice restaurants to choose from with knowledgeable staff, happy to offer suggestions from suitable drinks to well-prepared regional dishes. Some of the eating establishments mix local and international cuisine. You can get tapas, whiskey, sushi and Thai. During summer there are some opportunities for outdoor dining while enjoying the views. In Lapland you will find quite a lot of reindeer on the menu when you visit coffee shops and burger bars.

For over 19 years Kiruna Guidetur has promoted this gem of a holiday destination to the world. Kiruna is located within the Arctic Circle. As mentioned previously, what most people don’t realise about Kiruna is that it is the location of the world’s largest, most modern underground iron ore mine.

In the winter it is also home to the famous Ice Hotel which is rebuilt every year from the ice of the Torne Lake. The Ice Hotel’s winter season 2012/2013 starts in December and ends in April. During that time, they welcome visitors daily between the hours of 10.00 and 18.00. Winter season 2012/2013 will be the twenty-third for the Ice Hotel representing a journey of over twenty years from an Igloo of 60 square metres to the world's largest ice hotel measuring about 5500 square meters.

During the long winter months the sun barely shines and temperatures can drop to a chilly minus 30 degrees, yet the location has become a winter play ground for those seeking a unique and memorable experience. With guaranteed snow from November through to April, Kiruna’s rolling landscape plays host to many exciting tours and activities ranging from a moose safari & ice fishing on a dogsled to building and sleeping in your own igloo.

The Northern Lights

The area is also rated highly for viewing the northern lights which shine during the cold, clear months. Abisko Sky Station, some 90 kilometres outside Kiruna, is thought of as the best place in the world to view the lights.

Over the years Kiruna Guidetur has become the area’s leading and most trusted tour and activities supplier. With our very own dog kennels numbering over 100 dogs, fleet of 20 snowmobiles and range of cabins and camps, we are able to offer our visitors the very best in choice, personal service and price.

Aurora colosseum

We've started to run a new tour called Aurora colosseum. It's a new one but we have already gotten good reactions and have gotten some big group bookings.

Getting There
Kiruna Airport is the northern most airport in Sweden and lies around ten kilometres from Kiruna’s town centre.

Current information shows that there are seasonal charters from Leeds/Bradford, London Gatwick and Manchester operated by Jet2 and from London Heathrow operated by SAS.

SAS operate scheduled services to and from Stockholm-Arlanda Airport and Umeå which resume 27 August 2012 and Copenhagen starting 20 December 2012

Kiruna Airport is the chosen destination for the Spaceport Sweden project. Spaceport Sweden is a new joint venture between Swedish Space Corporation, the Jukkasjärvi Icehotel, LFV Group and Progressum and they hope, when operations start, that Virgin Galactic (http://www.virgingalactic.com/ ) will make Kiruna Airport their second base after the USA.

Come and see Kiruna for yourselves, it is a ‘real cool’ destination and promises to be a lot of fun. To find out more visit www.kgt.se
