'CRUISING FROM NEW ORLEANS'
New Orleans extends the cruise vacation by adding another port call to any cruise. Experience America’s Queen City and also enjoy a Caribbean cruise during the same vacation. New Orleans exudes ambiance and hospitality. Deep-rooted families create eclectic neighborhoods, host unique fairs and festivals and celebrate just about anything year round.
These ingredients create what’s been called “America’s Most Interesting City.” World famous Mardi Gras, French Quarter Festival and New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival draw more than two million visitors annually. New Orleans also hosts numerous cultural events and historic exhibits every month of the year. The Los Angeles Times named New Orleans one of the world’s “Don’t Miss Destinations”, Travelocity named the City one of 2007’s top-10 “Favorite Gourmet Destinations in the World”, and PortHole Cruise Magazine awarded its coveted “Best Comeback Port” award to New Orleans in 2007. New Orleans offers the cruise passenger two vacations in one, a chance to stretch their vacation dollar.
Lush balcony decoration
America’s 'Most Caribbean City' combines culture, history, food and fun to make it the most memorable port of call on a cruise. Situated in the heart of the City, the cruise terminal complex is just steps away from the French Quarter, Audubon Aquarium of the Americas, National World War II Museum, St. Charles Avenue Streetcar, Garden District homes, art and history museums and much more. Deep sea, salt marsh and fresh water fishing, tours of antebellum homes and swamp and river excursions and the Audubon Zoo are also convenient.
Those all important street musicians
Pick any one of the Crescent City’s 1,000 gourmet restaurants for some southern Creole cooking, stroll through the French Quarter for a look at the rustic architecture rich with history, or amble down Bourbon Street for some raucous adult adventures. Then take the entire family to a music hall to experience live jazz, blues and other genres of music generic to The Big Easy.
The Cruise Terminal
The Port’s Erato Street Cruise Terminal, a 90,000 square-foot facility with 1,006 parking spaces opened in October, 2006, and early reviews consider it the most accessible terminal in the cruise industry.
The Port of New Orleans has two more terminals on the drawing boards. The Julia St. Cruise Terminal, adjacent to Erato St., is the original terminal in New Orleans, and the Port has plans to completely renovate it and add a raised gangway. The Poland Ave. Wharf is one mile downriver of Canal St. and it is the site for a new $15 million terminal and parking facility.
