THE STATE OF COLORADO, U.S.A.
The western State of Colorado covers 103,600 square miles and borders New Mexico to the south, Wyoming to the north, Utah to the west and Kansas to the east. Eastern Colorado forms part of the Great Plains and along with Utah, New Mexico and Arizona forms the Colorado Plateau. The Colorado River rises in the Rockies north west of Denver and flows 1450 miles to the Gulf of California in Mexico. It flows through deep gorges and canyons, including the Grand Canyon. Dams have been built along its length, including the imposing Hoover Dam.

Rocky Mountains, Colorado
The Rocky Mountains lie to the west with Mount Elbert the highest peak at 14,432 ft. Colorado has more mountains than any other US State. Long snowy winters make it the skiing centre of America, but it also enjoys hot summers and short springs and autumns. Agriculture, mining and hi tech industries are the main contributors to the economy of a region that has moved swiftly from its modest beginnings with mining and trapping activities to being a powerful commercial presence in America.

Union Station, Denver
Denver, the Mile High city, is its capital, set in the foothills of the Rockies at the meeting point of the Platte River and Cherry Creek. The State Capitol building is ornate and elegant easily recognised by its golden dome. Downtown is predominantly red brick. Along with numerous other museums worth a visit are the Buffalo Bill Cody Museum and the Molly Brown house – Molly (Margaret) Brown being the Unsinkable Molly Brown, the Titanic survivor who was hailed as a heroine for her rescue attempts during that disaster.
Within 50 miles of Denver are the two mining towns of Georgetown and Idaho Springs both with well-preserved memorabilia.
Between April and November take one of the tours round the ancient cliff dwellings of the Mesa Verde National Park including the quite extraordinary 200-room Cliff Palace.
Enjoy the Victorian charm of Ouray and whilst there bathe in the Hot Springs pool. Don’t forget to take in the magnificence of the Box Canyon Falls and Park. Be a dare devil and try some white water rafting on the Arkansas River. Fishermen will be thrilled by the abundance of fish in all the State’s rivers.
The Rocky Mountain National Park covers 400 square miles of peaks and ridges and lakes and trails. The main route through the Park is Trail Ridge Road where you can see alpine and arctic flora, and possibly glimpse elk and moose, even a black bear. There are campsites in the park.

USAFA Chapel, Colorado Springs
The year-round resort of Colorado Springs, 60 miles south of Denver where Pikes Peak looms above the city and Manitou Springs, is well worth a visit. It began life in 1871 and grew rapidly in the 1890s when the gold rush was in full force.
Aspen, once a small Victorian mining town, today is arguably the largest and most popular of the State’s 26 ski areas and resorts. Another popular ski resort is that of Vail. Downhill skiing is the main attraction, along with snowshoeing, snowboarding and cross-country skiing, whilst in summer, hiking, motorbiking, cycling and all-terrain off-roading are favourite activities.
