Head down to Bournemouth, a colourful resort where seven miles of golden sands run alongside an array of shops, restaurants and nightlife. There is certainly no shortage of things to do, from water sports to award-winning gardens to family activities and events. This cosmopolitan town caters for everyone so it’s the ideal place to get a real taste of the south coast. A little further to the west is Plymouth, a pretty maritime city located in the centre of Devon and Cornwall. Plymouth offers easy access to an amazing natural environment and also provides a large choice of things to do. There’s a sweeping harbour, picturesque beaches and the usual city fare of theatres, aquariums, shopping and more. Historic architecture gives Plymouth real character – it’s even been chosen by Which magazine ‘top ten UK holiday destination’. Above Plymouth you’ll find Exeter, a modern city which still retains its historic charm. It is the capital city of Devon and is nestled amongst lush countryside, and is an ideal location for branching out and visiting the unspoilt beaches of the county’s two coastlines. While in the city, make sure you visit the magnificent Exeter Cathedral, which dates back to Norman times. Exeter’s underground passages are another great attraction, as well as Morwellham Quay. You’ll be spoilt for choice when it comes to things to do!

If you fancy taking the train a little further, make your way down to Penzance at the bottom of Cornwall. This area of the south coast is truly magical, with a laid-back vibe and prominent surfing culture. The ancient market town of Penzance itself is lively and friendly, with attractions including museums, galleries and the famous St Michael’s Mount. You could even take a ferry over to the Isles of Scilly and explore beyond Cornwall. And don’t forget to indulge in a delicious Cornish pasty or two.
