SWITZERLAND

Update - May 2012

Switzerland is simply gourmet heaven.

When you travel to Switzerland, one thing is for sure, you are in for a gastronomic treat. Yes, we are of course famous for the cheese and chocolate, but Switzerland actually has one of the most varied cuisines in the world, which is not unsurprising when you consider that this is a land of four languages and cultures.

From traditional mountain fare to elegant haute cuisine, from delicious specialities in the German speaking part, over the French influenced cuisine, to the Italian inspired food in the Ticino, make sure you arrive in Switzerland hungry!

The Swiss never shy away from celebrating food and have various food festivals to prove it! The next one coming up is a premiere, il Tavolo – the longest table in Switzerland. Read on to see how you can be seated at the table.

We are all getting a bit peckish now!

THE dining table.
Come to Zürich and experience il Tavolo food festival, Switzerland's longest dining table, from 27 June - 1 July. Among the highlights is the Gala Night: take a seat at the country’s longest table in the inner courtyard of the Swiss National Museum and enjoy gourmet delights conjured up by top Swiss chefs. Fancy taking part - view the festival programme and reserve your place at the table.

Andreas Caminada – A Swiss Gastronomic star

Last November Schloss Schauenstein received its 3rd converted Michelin star and cemented Andreas Caminada’s status as one of the most talented young chefs in Switzerland. His latest gourmet venture is Remisa, located right next door to Schloss Schauenstein, by day a cozy coffee house, by evening a perfect setting for exclusive dinner parties at the highest gastronomic level.

Lake Geneva region – A jewel in the Switzerland’s gourmet crown.
The Lake Geneva Region is home to some of Switzerland’s best restaurants, in fact the region can boast 13 Michelin starred restaurants, including one with 3 stars. The Hôtel de Ville, Crissier has for 15 years been under the patronage of Philippe Rochat, but as off the 1st of April the baton was passed to his right-hand man Benoît Violier, who will continue to uphold the legendary reputation as well as stamping his own innovative mark.

Famous Gruyère cheese

Gourmet Switzerland – Experience it first hand.
Culinary Switzerland is also about experiencing some of the many Swiss food produce first hand. One of the most famous is the Gruyère cheese. In their show diary you can witness how 29’000 tons of cheese are being produced every year. Wine is another essential Swiss produce and is celebrated throughout the year. One of the best is the Wii-Grill-Fäscht (Wine-Grill-Party) in Switzerland's highest located vineyards in the Valais.

Swiss Chocolate Train

The Swiss Chocolate Train is a joint venture of GoldenPass Services and Cailler-Nestlé. Ride in first-class comfort in a "Belle Epoque" Pullman car, vintage 1915 and/or the modern panorama car affording stunning views of the vineyards surrounding Montreux and medieval Gruyères.

Route: Montreux - Gruyères - Broc and return.

Depart Montreux on the Swiss Riviera, ascend to Gruyères, home of the famous Gruyère cheese, and eventually continue to Broc, where the chocolate factory is situated.

Cailler chocolate factory in Broc
The visitor trail provides a complete immersion into the brand, history and products of Cailler of Switzerland. The experience is sensitive, sensual and poetic, giving the visitor a window into the world of chocolate by means of a transparent and sparkling aesthetic.

This sense of imagination is paired with presentations on the different stages in the Cailler chocolate production process, which are relayed as part of the interactive audiovisual guided tour. Through cameras the visitors can watch live as the ingredients of chocolate are processed.

The past also comes to life through a selection of photographs that retrace the factory's history from its humble origins in 1898 right up to the 1960s. This journey through time brings memories to life.

Appetites whetted, visitors can then visit a specially designed shop which sells the entire range of Cailler of Switzerland chocolates.

Sensation, knowledge, discovery, pleasure - the original visitors' tour at the Broc chocolate factory has something for everyone.
