Gatwick opens online gateway to South East England
A new on line tourist information library launches today as a joint venture between Gatwick Airport and local organisations in the south east.
www.aroundgatwick.com gives visitors to the region inspiration and advice about the area’s finest attractions complete with route and travel information.
From ‘A Few Hours’ to ‘Stay a little longer’ as well as one and two-day trip ideas, the new www.aroundgatwick.com website promises to inspire visitors to discover the rich cultural offerings within easy striking distance of the airport’s doorstep. Gardens, castles, vineyards and quirky museums all make up the content of the new site, which highlights the attractions of neighbouring Sussex and Surrey but also enables users to explore everywhere from Kent in the east to the New Forest in the west, rising up as far as Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire.
Lindsay Baldwin, Head of Airport Communications said: “This is the first time we have been able to offer a tourist information service to passengers and we are pleased to be able to have this in place in time for the London 2012 Olympic Games. We are training over 300 Team London Ambassadors and hope they will be able to use this new site as we think this will add terrific value for passengers wanting to explore the region while they are here.” Karen Lacey of the South East Partnership agreed that the project would provide a significant legacy for the London 2012 Olympic Games. ‘We were delighted to support this project as it will introduce overseas visitors to south east destinations and attractions in a new way and hopefully make their visit to the country a much richer experience, a benefit that will last well beyond the Games themselves.’ SEEDA partly funded the programme with Tourism South East and West Sussex County Council.
Tourism South East, who project managed the site development, feel that the website will have a significant benefit for passengers and tourism
businesses in the region. Managing Director, Peter Colling said: “We are delighted to be working with Gatwick Airport on a range of initiatives to
improve the welcome for visitors and encourage them to experience the fantastic range of cultural and heritage attractions that the region offers.”
Lionel Barnard, Deputy Leader of West Sussex County Council, said: “As Gatwick is in West Sussex, we have been delighted to play our part in developing and launching the new web site. We hope it inspires many people travelling through the airport to take the time to explore the wonderful attractions of the local area.”
Other partners in the project included Surrey County Council and The Gatwick Diamond Initiative. www.aroundgatwick.com is launched on 18 June 2012.
